26. Advent season in Germany
It is December. The streets are full of lights. The first friends are baking cookies. Parents ask what you want. There is a smell of mulled wine. We are in the Advent season!
The Advent calendar
An Advent wreath is a calendar with 24 doors. Sometimes there are also small gifts or sweets in the packages. You can buy them or even make them yourself for your loved ones. On December 1, you start opening a door or a package, until December 24. Especially children love Advent calendars, so the time until Christmas is much easier to endure.
The Advent wreath
The first Advent this year is on November 28. It always falls on the fourth Sunday before Christmas. On this day you light the first candle of your Advent wreath. On every following Sunday you can light another candle.
Advent, Advent, ein Lichtlein brennt. Erst eins, dann zwei, dann drei, dann vier – und wenn das fünfte Lichtlein brennt, dann hast du Weihnachten verpennt.
The Christmas Market
In almost every German city and even in smaller villages you can find a Christmas market. This is set up at Advent and offers stalls with various offers such as mulled wine (a warm wine), bratwurst, gingerbread and gift ideas. We Germans often like to go to the Christmas market during Advent and enjoy the atmosphere.
Cookies are specific cookies that we bake at Christmas time.
Particularly popular are vanilla crescents and cinnamon stars. Yummy!
The Christmas gift
On 24.12, that is, on Christmas Eve, we give each other gifts. These can be letters, bought or used gifts. On this day we also eat with the whole family and celebrate Christmas.
The Christmas tree
It is typical to build a Christmas tree in our apartments and houses. It can range from very small to very large. Most Germans have real trees, which they buy during Advent and then also decorate with lights and decorations. Under it, of course, are the gifts.
O Tannenbaum, o Tannenbaum, …
